2018-2019 Schedule

--2018--

Meetings are at 10:00 am at the home of the host unless otherwise indicated. 

January 8 -- Mary Ann will host. Book selection is: The Remains of the Day (1989), by Kazuo Ishiguro . Four copies are available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system.

February 12 -- Deral will host. Book selection is: The Practice of the Wild, by Gary Snyder. We will meet at in the small conference room at the Newport library on the lower level.

March 12 -- Pat will host. Book selection is The Hidden Life of Trees (2016), by Peter Wohlleben. One copy is available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system. .

April  9 -- Kris will host. Book selection is:  The life-changing magic of tidying up : the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing (2014), by Marie Kondo. There are two copies available through Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system as well as a book on CD and an ebook format.

May 14 -- Sue will host. Book selection is: Killers of the Flower Moon—The Osage Murders and the birth of the FBI  by David Grann.  Two print copies and one book-on-CD are available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system.

June 11 -- Craig will host. Book selection is: East of Eden, by John Steinbeck.
 It is a long book and if you do not want to invest that much time read the following key chapters for discussion:
Chapters 12  all, 13.1, 15 all, 22 all, 24 all, 26, 29 all  (Technology), 55.3.

Discussion will center on the understanding of the story of Cain and Able, especially on how it relates to us and to mankind.

July 9 -- John A. will host. Discussion to be held at the Newport library conference room.  Book selection is: Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler. Two copies are available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook  Library.

August 13 -- Mary Ann will host.  Book selection is: House of Broken Angels, by Luis Alberto Urrea. Two copies are available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system.

September 10 -- We will not meet.

October 8  -- Deral & John will co-host. Discussion to be held at the Newport library conference room.
     Deral's book selection is:  Fascism: A Warning (2018), by Madeleine Albright.  There will be three copies available through the Newport Library. 
     John P's selection is a book selection to read and a lecture to watch. Book selection is: On Tyranny, 20 lessons from the 20th Century,  by Timothy Snyder. The lecture by the author is at this link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6glynCBQtgk
The lecture is a summary of a second very recent book by Timothy Snyder entitled "The Road to Unfreedom" which is also worth looking into.

November 12 -- Brent will host.  Discussion to be held at his home (since the Newport library conference room is not available this date.) Book selection is: Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: a 500-year history (2017), by Kurt Andersen. There are three copies available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system.

December 7 -- Pat will host.  Book selection is:  My Mother's Son (2018), by David Hirshberg.  We will meet in the conference room of the Newport Public Library. One copy is available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system.

There are multiple copies available in different formats (book, ebook, book on CD) through the  Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system. February 11 -- Sue will host. Selection is an article from the Winter 2019 edition of Yes! magazine entitled, "What to do about a segregated economy."

March 11 -- Craig will host. Book selection is A Time for Purpose: A Survivor's Guide to Trial, Truth, and Justice, by Stephen J. O'Connor.  Craig has two copies available.

April 8 -- John A. will host. Book selection is Blindspot:  Hidden Biases of Good People, by Mahzarin R. Banaji and Anthony G. Greenwald. One copy is available through the Newport/Driftwood/Tillamook library system. We will meet in the Newport Library conference room which has been reserved.

May 13 -- Mary Ann will host. Book to be selected later.

June 10 --  John P. will host. Book to be selected later.
